Week of January 9

We wrapped up our Earth Science unit this week with some reading about and exploration of fossils.  We  are finishing up a couple weeks early as the kids are getting bored with studying rocks, earth and the like and are very excited about the Solar System.  They have been exploring the Space apps on our iPad and are looking forward to learning more about the stars and planets.

Gabe learned more about verbs this week using linking verbs in sentences and identifying and memorinzing them.  John chanted right along with Gabe as we recited linking/helping verbs.  Lily also completed two grammar lessons this week with indepth study of prefect, simple, and progressive verbs in past, present and future tenses.  She only has two more lessons and then we wait for the rest of curriculum to be released!

Spelling words, phongrams, reading and handwriting were also practiced by all this week.

As was math with steady progress being made.

Lily has been practicing her piano lots.  Gabe returned to Judo this week, much to his delight.  We made it out ice skating at Baker Park.  It was the boys first time on the ice and John wasn't too sure but Lily helped Gabe and he did quite well for a first attempt.

We're also been watching Good Eats as a family which is a fun, education cooking show that we're been learning lots from!

Hello Jaime,

What a perfect time to move to studying the solar system. The days are shorter so your students will have a better chance to star gaze. The iPad has some wonderful Apps for exploring the night sky. I look forward to hearing more about the resources you use for exploring stars and planets.

Do you have the "Planet Quest" board game? If not, I can bring it during my next home visit. Our boys enjoyed playing it while studying space last year.

Thank you for the orchestrating the thorough Earth science study. It is interesting that Lily, Gabe, and John were ready to move on to something new after Christmas. Lily has covered everything that she needed to for her grade 7 earth science outcomes.

By the way, how did the crystals turn out? We attempted some "rock candy" crystals last week but so far we haven't seen any crystals develop. I think it is a failed attempt on our end.

Thanks for highlighting the grammar work that Lily, Gabe, and John did last week. It is neat that John is joining right in. I hope Lily's next lessons will be released soon!

I enjoyed seeing the picture of Gabe's first time on ice! It looks like he did well.

Good Eats will fit well with health this term. What a fun family activity!

I bet your kids are having fun with all the snow this week. Our boys had trouble concentrating on their work yesterday as they just wanted to be out tobogganing.

We've tried crystals a couple times now and haven't had success. I wondered about trying candy. Oh well.
We'd love to play your planet game. The kids love playing games and I love it that they're learning so effortlessly The iPad apps for space are particularly nice and are one of the reasons they're excited about moving on.
We took the kids skating again and Gabe was treated to an impromptu lesson from a coach who had him skating on his own within 10 minutes.
The "Good Eats" show is really fun and we all learn tons. We watched a show recently that focused on moving from an energy rich diet to a nutrient rich diet and the kids learned some really great information that we've been able to incorporate into our eating habits.

Hello Jaime,

I am surprised that the crystal mixture in your rocks and minerals kit didn’t work. We managed to grow some crystals many moons ago using Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid bluing. I think that might be the way to go if we try it again.

Please don’t let me discourage you from trying candy crystals. There are some detailed instructions on the internet that I should have read before trying our experiment. :0( I am thinking we might not have waited long enough for our crystals to grow (I gave up and dumped them after a few days) or that we might not have had a rough enough string for the crystals to adhere to.

How kind of the skating coach to give Gabe a quick lesson and get him skating on his own! Gabe must have been eager and ready to learn because it was weeks on the ice before our boys were on their feet – even with coaching.

The “Good Eats” sounds like a great show. I am glad that your kids are into watching it and are learning a lot about healthy eating.
